Native to Southern India and Indonesia, Turmeric, (Curcuma Longa) has been widely cultivated on the mainland in the islands of the Indian Ocean for nearly 4000 years where it was used as a culinary spice and had some religious importance. Today, turmeric is widely cultivated in the tropics and goes by different names in different cultures and countries. It has a wide range of uses such as for cooking, flavoring vegetables, coloring beverages, etc.
